On June 18, 2025, Sigachi Sets Up Advanced R&D Centre in Hyderabad to Power Global API Innovation, marking its evolution from excipient leader to API innovator. This launch aligns seamlessly with the company’s goal of strengthening its role in India’s pharmaceutical manufacturing landscape, catering to the global demand for regulated market pharmaceutical exports.

As Hyderabad evolves into a biotech infrastructure leader, this facility becomes a cornerstone in both Sigachi’s strategic expansion and the city’s positioning as a drug discovery research center of global relevance.

Centralized Innovation to Accelerate the Drug Development Lifecycle

More than just a modern facility, the new R&D centre represents a deep shift in how Sigachi approaches API process development. By unifying formulation, testing, and regulatory functions under one roof, the company aims to shorten development timelines and improve its clinical trial readiness across critical markets.

The lab adheres to stringent GMP-certified research lab protocols and meets the benchmarks set by international regulatory bodies including the USFDA and EMA.

Key Objectives Behind the New API R&D Hub

  • Accelerate Drug Ingredient Development: The centre supports faster and more integrated workflows for the design and optimization of APIs.
  • Enhance Global Regulatory Compliance: Streamlined documentation and data management enable timely approvals across regulated markets.
  • Drive Strategic Investment: Backed by ₹8.3 crore (~$1 million), the investment targets pharma R&D investment in India focusing on cardiovascular and oncology APIs.
  • Enable Advanced Pharmaceutical R&D: Research areas include 3D printed medicines, co-processed MCC blends, and complex API formulation expertise.

High-Tech Facilities and a Specialized Talent Pool

The facility houses world-class instruments and operates within a controlled environment, purpose-built for advanced pharmaceutical R&D. A skilled team of 15–20 scientists is leading a wide spectrum of operations, including:

  • Performance testing and scale-up of high-quality APIs
  • Safety, efficacy, and long-term stability studies
  • Predictive modeling to assess manufacturing and storage behavior
  • Detailed regulatory documentation tailored for India’s pharma exports

The team is also preparing for the release of Croscarmellose Sodium (CCS), expected within 18 months—a move that diversifies Sigachi’s portfolio beyond MCC and strengthens its position in API manufacturing hubs.

CEO’s Perspective

Amit Raj Sinha, CEO and Managing Director of Sigachi, views the new R&D centre as a foundational step in the company’s long-term roadmap.

“This facility empowers us with the right talent, infrastructure, and tools to deliver safer, smarter, and faster solutions to global pharmaceutical markets,” he said.

His message highlights a clear intention to move beyond excipients and become a meaningful player in the next-gen pharmaceutical technology space.

Tragedy and Response

While the R&D launch was a landmark, the company encountered a major setback shortly after. On June 30, 2025, a fire at Sigachi’s Pashamylaram MCC facility—believed to be caused by a dust explosion—led to unfortunate casualties and injuries.

In response, Sigachi implemented several compassionate and strategic actions:

  • ₹1 crore in compensation for each affected family
  • Comprehensive medical care for injured staff
  • Temporary 90-day shutdown of the unit and rerouting production to Gujarat facilities

The company’s swift and transparent approach underlines its commitment to safety, ethics, and operational continuity in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Real Estate Ripple Effect from Hyderabad’s Pharma Ecosystem

The impact of Hyderabad’s pharma startup ecosystem extends beyond laboratories. The rising demand for high-quality housing—particularly near research corridors—is being met by upscale residential projects such as Godrej Regal Pavilion in Kokapet. The trend reflects a larger synergy between India’s pharma talent pool and the city’s booming infrastructure.

Professionals in API and drug formulation sectors are increasingly choosing premium residences closer to their workplaces, further reinforcing the connection between life Fueling growth in pharmaceutical sciences and premium real estate.

Conclusion:

Sigachi’s new R&D centre in Hyderabad signals global innovation facility—it’s a statement of intent. It represents the company’s shift toward pharmaceutical innovation in India that’s fast, safe, and aligned with global demand. Despite recent challenges, Sigachi has demonstrated resilience, ethical leadership, and a vision deeply rooted in scientific excellence.

As Hyderabad’s innovation corridor grows stronger, this launch is a crucial step toward making the city—and India—a dominant player in global API innovation.
